What is it you have to sell?  A product?  A service?  An idea?
A concept?

The problem with getting traffic to your site is you really have
to stay on top of pay-per-click ads to make ’em work.  And those
costs can add up fast.  You’re probably beter off outsourcing to
someone like my friend Kirt who eats and breathes that sort of  thing.

Unless it just happens to be your deal.  I mean, if you want to
eat it, breathe it, live it — then go for it.

Search engine optimization is great but getting a VOLUME of
traffic can be a challenge.  And Google can pull the rug out from
under you by changing the rules.

Yet, when I do surveys asking for topics of interest, most people
are a lot more interested in the concept of getting a top 10 Google
ranking vs. selling via an affiliate program.

“The Lone Voice In The Wilderness Will NOT
Stop Teaching And Preaching The Superiority
Of Affiliate Programs For Traffic”

If you haven’t noticed, I’m pretty much the lone voice in the
wilderness on this topic.  For some reason, the latest black hat
seo, or the latest viral whatever are perceived as hotter and
sexier than an affiliate program.

Which, actually, is fine be me in that it means less competition.
People are herd driven. So they do what they see EVERYONE ELSE
doing, assuming it must be right.

Well, the crowd is often wrong.

Sometimes you have to use your brain.  How is it that methods which
will NOT be working 6 months or a year from now are more potent
than one that will?

Another approach to traffic is the “grab bag” method — do it ALL
some people say.  But honestly, for each method you use, there’s a
BIG learning curve, software to buy and so forth.

You can NOT do it all unless you have a team that is substantial.
Most solopreneurs don’t have a team. So you have to focus on
ONE or two things that will get you the most bang for the buck.

I’m really the lone voice out there (and have been for 7+ years)
saying the #1 best way to get traffic is via an affiliate program.
There are others who see things my way. But if you notice, most
new products are about other methods, at conferences everyone asks
about other methods and so forth.

The fly in that ointment is if you do NOT have an Internet
marketing product.  My detractors would say that if you don’t sell
to Internet marketers, an affiliate program won’t work for you.

I disagree 100%.

“How To Get Traffic If You Do NOT
Sell To Internet Marketers”

Here’s what you do:  Put together a PDF report on a hot topic
anyone involved in your area of interest WOULD want to read.
When people buy your product on the thank you page, give ’em the
PDF.  Remind them to pass it along to their friends.

And, along with that, give them an affiliate URL they can use to
send their friends to the report.

The secret is pass along tools.  Problem solving articles, reports,
PDF’s.

The other thing you can do is identify people in your field who
have LISTS and sell to the SAME folks  you do.  Then make friends
and eventually work your jv (joint venture) magic.

This requires making friends and good networking.  Don’t just
approach people for jv’s cold.  Well, you can but it isn’t optimal.
Your best results come from nurturing your contacts.

You can use: http://www.ezmailouts.com to send little postcards
with gift certificates to Starbucks, Amazon and the like.  That’s
a U.S. resource.  Don’t know if it’ll work for you UK’ers,
Aussies, and asia marketers.

There ARE many things you can do to promote an affiliate program.
I covered a number of those in my 6-week tele-class I did on the
Affiliate Dashboard.

It isn’t for sale right now.  It won’t be cheap.  It’ll be $1,000
or so for those who want the Dashboard and the calls, transcripts
and other goodies.

People always ask me about the best software for an affiliate
program.  And that depends on the level you’re at in this business.
I don’t have one blanket solution for everyone.

Why Not Just Use Clickbank?

A lot of people wonder about using Clickbank for their affiliate
program.  You CAN do that.  It’s not a bad option. The thing I
don’t like, in general, about it is you don’t have control over
your affiliates and your affiliate list.

People see themselves as an affiliate for CLICKBANK, NOT for you!
You want to have your own affiliate list. So that if you need
money, you just pop out an email to that list.

There are some positives to Clickbank.  So I don’t want to rule
it out categorically.  But as a rule of thumb, I’d look at setting
up your own program.

There’s a concept I’ve been teaching and preaching for several
years now.  It’s called Milcers — Marlon’s Internet Lifestyle
Club.

There’s a book that came out recently that became an instant
best seller.  It’s called the “Four Hour Workweek.”

look at the blog for a GREAT example of how to do a blog:

Here’s the thing:  He’s saying the SAME things overall I’ve been
saying for two or three years.  I guess when you codify it in a
book with a catchy title and USP, it does a LOT for the perception
of the marketplace.

It’s a great book. You should read it.  He shows how he runs a
large business with NO employees!  This runs counter to what some
in this industry teach — that the “Internet lifestyle” is a lie”
they shout.

That you can’t run a business from home and so forth.  People with
their own agendas and concepts to sell have just pounded the
daylights out of the concept.  I haven’t tried to defend the
concept of the Internet lifestyle just because I didn’t feel like
arguing about it.

The Milcer’s “Internet lifestyle” concept really annoyed some of
my competitors.  They KNOW they wear a watch and carry a cell phone
all the time like it’s glued to them. They KNOW they have the
schedule from hades.  They bitched about the concept. Moaned about
it.  Tried to DESTROY it by mispronouncing the name on purpose as
a profane name (and posted such in forums).

So I’m HAPPY to see this book that sets the record straight and
articulates the concept better than I was able to.  Masterfully so,
in fact.

Now, for 6 or 7 years, I ran this business from home.  If you don’t
believe that, refer to my “Digital Product Creation System” which
documented my outsourcing systems THREE years ago before anybody
was even talking about it. And before that my product at
http://www.operateyourbiz.com.  I was outsourced before outsourcing
was cool.  I was using Elance before anyone knew what it was just
about.

You go back in Archive.org and search web sites.  And see at the
time I published Digital Product Creation System and Operate Your
Biz if anyone ELSE was discussing these things.

It’s dated now in terms of systems. But it shows how 3 or 4 years
ago my whole entire team worked virtually.  We documented all our
systems.

This is another area I was a very EARLY innovator.  No surprise to
those of you who have been around awhile.

Now, personally, I like having a small office with a cadre of sharp,
loyal employees.

Fact is, for many years I ran this business with virtual staff.
Once you hit say 1/2 million or more in sales, a small office is
probably a good idea. But before, virtual is good. And there are
$15,000,000+ businesses ran 100% by virtual employees.  You CAN
do it.

In the book, you’ll see the charts of his product delivery system
and order taking.  Let’s see, I’ve been doing that EXACT thing for
how many years?  More than I can remember.

One thing I want you to notice when you read the book is how he
SELLS his idea or vision.  Frankly, he did a better job of it than I did!

There’s something to be learned from everyone.

What I CAN tell you is that if I worked the four hour workweek, I’d
have to INCREASE the number of hours I work most weeks!

I’m on the one hour workweek plan.  More or less.

There’s a lot to be said for the instant credibility you gain by
writing and promoting a book.  Last week I talked to you about TITLES.

I must say that the “Four Hour Workweek” title is vastly superior
to Milcers as a title.  Coined words don’t usually make good titles.
What’s funny is, my article on names and titles didn’t get nearly
as many clicks as my article on getting a top 10 position in Google.
People have seo on the brain.  It’s crazy.

Truth is, naming your product is more important. The name POSITIONS
the product.  And if you haven’t read Positioning by Trout and Ries,
it’s a fast read and recommended.  I prefer the 20th Anniversary
edition since it’s hard bound.  I like hard bound editions when
it’s a classic.

You literally see things you don’t see in a teeny tiny print
paperback edition.  Plus, psychologically, a hard bound book tells
you it’s important.

I admire the way he sells the concept in the book.  If you read it,
you’ll see that while there is some concrete info, it’s mostly
vision and concept.  It’s a “manifesto” of sorts.  A term I think
Seth Godin has made popular.

There are a few things he does NOT say about the Four Hour Workweek
that need to be said.  He STARTED with a highly successful product
(in terms of sales).  Yes, his overhead was eating up his profits.
But still, he spent a number of years building up to the point where
he COULD work the four hour workweek.

I did too.  It’s an unfair expectation to think you’ll do this
overnight or without effort or toil.  Although it only takes one
great sales letter and concept to make you an overnight success.

In some ways, the “Four Work Workweek” book is the prime example of
that fact.

There are things in the book I don’t agree with.  And I think are
slightly misguided.  But overall, it’s a great concept and a great
read.  If you have complex product delivery, using a virtual
outsourcing team isn’t going to fly well.  You need an individual.

One of the things that sells the book is his “persona”.  He’s a
world champion in some martial art (forget which one).  He’s
traveled the world.  Very accomplished at age 29.

This 100% helped sell the book.

Mostly, what I love is the way he sold the concept. Wow!  He really
nailed it so well.  Oh, you know how I’m an advocate of testing
product ideas and titles?

He tested his titles on Google as PPC ads.  And he PROMOTED the
initial launch ONLINE via blogs.  More on that later.

B. “What I’ve Learned About Naming Your Product Or Service
— and How One Wrong Word In A Title Cost Me My First
Copywriting Job”

The name you give your product or service is crucial.

My first copy writing job was at a company that went bankrupt
because they called their private membership club the
“Millionaire’s Circle”.

Three states in the U.S. said the name WAS an income claim,
in and of itself.  That’s right, just having that ONE word
in a product title put the company under.

After bankrupting the company fighting 3 attorney generals,
they changed the name to the “winners circle” instead of
the “Millionaire’s Circle.”  But that little naming mistake
put the company under and caused me to lose my first
copy writing job.

A lot of people wonder if I’m just a sour puss for making a
big deal over the proliferation of blatant income claims.  There
IS a reason for it.

If you’re in UK, Australia, or Canada, I bet there are similar
precedents in your country you should be aware of.

But naming goes much deeper than just not using “potty words.”

Let me illustrate the vital importance of the name you choose
with several of the names I’ve given products.

1.  The “Cash Like Clockwork” system.

That’s a great name.

The only reason I don’t use the name more is that I really
hate to use things that have too blatant of a money appeal
in them.

The good things about the name are that it conveys a
benefit.  Your product name should usually have a benefit
in it.  The other good thing is that it isn’t too generic.
It implies a brand.  Plus, it lends itself to a visual —
a CLOCK!

So, overall, it’s a great name.  I would be more comfortable
with “Sales Like Clockwork” than I would “Cash.”  Thing is,
people like names with two letters that are the same.

Think of Coca-Cola as an example.  You’ll also find a lot
of celebrities with names that follow the same pattern.
Marilyn Monroe, Alan Alda and many others.

Marketing With Marlon came out #1 on our name survey.  Part
of the reason for that is the two use of the two M’s.

2.  “The Amazing Formula”

It isn’t as good a name as “Cash Like Clockwork.”  And the reason
I say that is there isn’t a clear benefit in it unless you add
the rest of the name “….That Sells Products Like Crazy.”  But
now, you have a really LONG name.

The positive is that the word “Formula” still hasn’t made the
rounds nearly as much as the word “System.”  Overall, the title
has worked well.  But if I did it over, I’d try to get a benefit
in the core title.

3.  “Milcers”

Milcers has a problem.  It’s a coined name that is hard to
pronounce.  Most people called it Milsers instead of MILKERS.
Plus, I thought the idea of “milk your cash cow” was obvious
but implied.

To me, “Marlon’s Internet Lifestyle Club” explained the
benefit. But to many others, they didn’t like the word
“lifestyle.”

Thing is, my style is to NOT put money directly in the title of
a  product.  One reason is you risk Paypal feeling that you
went over the line. I don’t like my titles to seem too
“bizopy” (short for “like a business opportunity”).

One of the first laws of online business is:

“Protect your merchant processing at all costs.”

Without it, you don’t have a business.  I’m going to rename
Milcers.  I’ll keep what I feel is good in the concept.
But add a new angle or twist.

4.  “The Marketing Diary”

The name is too generic to be honest.  But I liked the word Diary.
And I chose the word “marketing” over some name that more
directly implied money.

At least I should have come up with a “D”-word to use in place of
“Marketing.”  The name would have been better.

The main problem with the name is, “What’s the benefit to the buyer?”
Who cares if they buy a diary about marketing?  See, there’s no
benefit.

That’s a problem.

5.  “Articles By Marlon”

The title I’ve been using for my ezine is “Articles By Marlon” or
“The Sell Products Like Crazy Ezine.”  I’m going to move to a NEW
title. It’s a secret right now, because I want to create a blog to
match.  The problem with the existing title is, “what’s the benefit?”
Is there REALLY a benefit to getting another article by email?

The only benefit that the article is “By Marlon” is that it isn’t
“By” someone else.  That doesn’t quite cut it in this age of noise.

Tips On Naming Your Products,
Ezines, and Memberships

The biggest problem with names is finding a DOMAIN.  It
seems like most of the good, short ones are taken.  I tried
like crazy to find a nice, short domain for the renaming
of Milcers and got nowhere with that search.

I had the same problem with my blog.  I’ll probably end of
using “marlonsblog.com” or something like that.  The blog
isn’t up yet, so don’t go there.

The reason short names are good is that they’re easier for
people to spell. The chances people will type a long domain
without a typo aren’t good.

You may have seen the article in Inc. magazine about the
guy who is registering thousands of domains that end in
.cm instead of .com to get the typo traffic.

It costs something like $600 to register a .cm name.  But he
made a deal directly with the country (Cameroon or something
like that).  Point is, a lot of people can’t even type .com
without making a mistake!

Normally, your product name should have a benefit in it.
However, web sites do well with coined names.  Think Google,
Yahoo and others.  Short and memorable. But good luck finding a
name like that in today’s environment.

MSN isn’t a particularly good name.  Do NOT use just 3 letters like
that.  People can’t remember them unless you have the marketing
budget of Microsoft.  In which case, do whatever you feel like.

Oh, if you wanna learn more about naming, I recommend the book
“Positioning” by Trout and Ries.  It’s a classic.

1.  I’m much more productive since I bought my latest
computer.  If you’re hesitating because you love your old
box but it’s slow ’cause you have so much junk on it, take
the plunge and update.

2.  Buy an external “firewire” backup drive and use it.

3.  My knew box has Vista.  I’m not crazy about it.  It’s a
tad buggy. And personally, I like the old XP interface.  Thing
is, if you buy a new box, you have no choice but to get Vista on
it.

4.  I bought a HP Color LaserJet 2605dn.  I’m happy with the
performance so far.  It appears to be a workhorse and the color
cartridges are fairly priced.
