C. 7 Ways To Kick Your Sales & Profits Up A Notch — Starting
This Week

Subtitle: Cpa networks, squeeze pages, upsells, downsells,
new traffic sources — and more!

Kick up your sales a notch — starting this week.

Yesterday, I had an awesome phone call with my pal Daegan Smith.
Daegan's interview is in Promo Dashboard if you have that
product.

Daegan has a background in wrestling. And we were comparing your
progress in Internet marketing to the learning the basics of
wrestling.

The very first basic you learn in wrestling is called the
“one leg take down.” And you don't go on to learn other
more advanced methods until you learn it.

I look at this as a tree.

And every tree has “roots.” If the tree doesn't have deep
roots, what happens when a storm comes along?

Well, we're in a bit of a storm right now in the business
world. There's no denying that the U.S. and a few other
countries are experiencing a pullback in spending, consumer
confidence, credit and other things.

Now, if you have “deep roots,” then you're built to survive
and thrive in storms.

But what if you don't have deep roots?

Sam Carpenter from “Work The System” fame says:

“Look hard at the survivors around you – the folks who were in
business three years ago and who are still in business today.
You'll notice a commonality: These people fixate on perfecting
systems that are within their grasps, while they detach
themselves from the details of the things they can't affect.
In positioning themselves in this way, they overcome personal
malaise by becoming tremendously efficient, while they defeat
general malaise by ignoring it.”

Last week at the Ryan Deiss/Perry Belcher seminar in Austin
(a terrific event by the way), I talked to long time marketer
and customer Bill Harrison. Bill has a huge, thriving business
now.

And he's doing better now than ever before. Why? Because
he ADDED new systems to counteract the effects of the
downturn.

Since I AM the King of Step-By-Step Internet marketing, I'm
gonna lay out a system for you to kick things up a notch,
whether you're getting started or you're an established
pro.

1. Add new traffic systems

Daegan mentioned to me that he bought an excellent ebook the
other day with a way of getting traffic from MSN, an under-
exploited traffic source.

The KEY is to turn your new traffic source into a SYSTEM,
so you can outsource it.

If you have to do the work yourself, it'll NEVER get done!

Or maybe you don't aggressively do article marketing. My long
time affiliate Sean Mize has an outstanding system for
article marketing.

All you have to do is execute by creating the system or buying
a system from someone who has already put it together then
outsource it.

If you need help with outsourcing, go to:
http://www.outsourceplan.com

a. Find one new source of traffic by someone who has created
a system for it.

You do NOT want to recreate the learning curve yourself. If
you don't already have an affiliate program, I highly recommend
you start there. http://www.affiliatedashboard.com is a total
system.

b. Get the basics in place

If there's software to buy or install, get that done by someone.
Get the basics up and running.

c. Create your written or video system that you can outsource

d. Find someone to operate the details of the system and
sub-systems.

2. Create an offer for the cpa networks

This past weekend, I saw Jim Lillig (an old time friend) at
the Ryan Deiss/Perry Belcher event. Jim is CEO of offerati.com
which is a cpa network.

Big dog Casey owns the majority of offerati.

Mike Filsaime has started a CPA network.

Mike Hill has a product on the CPA Tsunami. Mike goes way back
to the Boulder seminars Mizel, Declan and I did.

This is an ADVANCED strategy and, in my opinion, not for
beginners. But it CAN really ramp up your traffic.

If you do this, you need to spend 3-6 months really focusing
on it. It's a major initiative. Your visitor value is
everything and that means you need upsells and downsells that
work great.

If Clickbank was college then CPA networks are the graduate
program. An offer on there that succeeds can bring in 1,500
subscribers a day — and more.

I know one marketer who rumor says gets 100,000 subscribers
a MONTH!

3. Tweak your squeeze page

I've seen actual stats on squeeze pages that convert 60% to
70% of raw, cold traffic into subscribers. It IS possible
by doing lots of split testing using Google Website
Optimizer or whatever your tool of choice is.

a. Find a variety of squeeze page designs and ideas
b. Get the varieties designed for your lead generator
c. Put into Google Website Optimizer
d. Keep split testing
e. Work through all the sub-systems and optimize them.

e.1 Test different thank you for subscribing pages to see
which works best.
e.2 Test an offer on the thank you page vs. a straight pitch
to get people to confirm their subscription
e.3 Test single vs. double confirmation. This makes a huge
difference.
3.4 Test a custom subject line on your confirmation email
3.5 Test the page people go to AFTER they confirm their
email address.

4. Work your uspells and downsells

Since getting your email delivered is a bit dicey, in today's
market you have to push the pedal on the upsells and downsells.
You don't have a choice.

If you don't understand upsells and downsells, refer to the
articles on my blog.

a. Test starting high and going down in price
b. Expand the $ amount of one offer to test the upper limits
c. Compare your upsells and downsells to the competition.
d. A high visitor value is essential for your affiliate program

Again, if you don't understand the concept of visitor value, you
need to log in some time on marlonsnews.com reading back ezine
issues.

5. Hit your autoresponders hard

a. Put extra effort into those first few emails
b. Test your email sequence until it's a sales machine
c. Subscribe to many emails and test your deliverability

c.1 Subscribe to a gmail, hotmail, yahoo, aol, mail.com and
so forth.
c.2 If your emails are getting received, then search Google
for “whitelisting procedures.”

6. Be more aggressive in your Ockham's Razor procedures

Take that formula in Ockham's Razor and work the living
daylights out of it.

My pal Jason Fladlien is releasing 1 new product a month!
He's an Ockham's Razor machine!

I've been spending all my time tweaking our systems. But
I'm ramping up into Ockham's Razor mode!

I can't wait.

7. Look for your Red Factor edges

Who is underserved? Who is overserved? Who is a non-
consumer? Where is the opportunity?

What is your advantage? Are you a Stealth Marketer?
Are you in a drag race? Are you running a “both and” play?
Are you going “high low?”

What's your marketing play?

It's CRAZY to do marketing without knowing the play you're
running. That's random marketing and a really bad idea.

You go in knowing your advantage upfront.

    Marlon:

I have an issue which I don't know how to manage. MY main products are nutritional products through an MLM. I writing a blog on health. To me, I feel that profits can be made easier and quicker with helping people with your products, showing them how to develop, sell and promote their products which my blog or MLM doesn't do. How do I accomplish both?

[Hey Chris, how are you? That's how Mike Dillard, Joe Shroeder and Daegan Smith teach people to promote their mlm. Dale Calvert does too I think. Info products = front end. mlm = back end. Ann Sieg does that too.]

  • Leigh says:

Marlon: Big thanks for this issue! Please, please, please don't stop laying things out for us in your step-by-step outlines.

Hey, newbies: this is KEY INFORMATION. You can clip these paragraphs and tape them onto your computer screen! They are true roadmaps to what to do and in what order. Too many details would OBSCURE the path. These are mini-business plans that are extremely valuable.

Once you know what the plan is you can assess your skills and go after what you need. If you get lost, look at the paragraph taped to the computer!

Simply learning a bunch of tech stuff without a system is of very little use. Beginners don't KNOW what they NEED to know. Marlon, your outlines show how it all hangs together. Bravo!!!!

Businesses pay big bucks to consultants to diagram out business plans in this logical way. This is excellent work, Marlon. I hope everyone who is complaining about wanting more details, will go back and take another look.

    Keep it up.

  • Ben Stacy says:

    Hi Marlon,

Great Info as usual. I do understand most of your information you are relaying here but certain parts are a little to advanced.

My first couple of my years online were a disaster because of a team of crooks that called them self teachers taught old worn out marketing procedures that let to financial disaster for me.

I have been trying to self learn and not gaining much ground but, I am getting a grasp on the way things do really work.

I appreciate what you do and I am learning more and more from you daily. Thanks aagin,

    Ben

[Ben, here are the things that work: Find a group of people who buy stuff a lot, find out what they buy, create products, give reason to buy from you, get on list, send emails. None of those things are old or worn out. You make money by selling stuff to people who buy a lot.]

  • Marlon – plenty of good information in this email. I felt a little exhausted after reading it. I wasn't sure if it was a teaching article or an informational ezine. I thought there were too many topics (in itself that's not a bad thing, except many of these topics need more detail for a certain section of your audience) and that the usual focus was missing.

However, as others have said I think that only the advanced crowd are really going to grasp this and benefit as they probably already have the basics in place. This could be discouraging for the not so advanced who then are reminded of how much they still need to learn. Upsells, downsells, cpa… squeeze pages…some are still struggling to understand these and get their first one up, never mind focusing on split-testing.

Each topic in this edition could well be an e-zine in itself. There's a lot of great information here, it's just general where people want detail on "how to".

A consideration is sending advanced stuff just to your advanced readers and for those still on the basic tract either direct them to where this is in your product from the outset so they don't have to read what doesn't apply to them (yet) or send them a shorter, less advanced e-zine version.

[NIcky, I tried the advance version thing. It really didn't catch on. I agree with the terminology sorta. Except every ezine issue every week almost I define these terms. I've even sent out a glossary of terms! But some of my readers are new and haven't read the past issues on the blog.]

  • Ron says:

    Marlon,

Good info and not too complicated for me, some object to terms used but how else can you explain things except with industry standard nomenclature, just look the terms up and eventually you will understand their meaning. It's just part of the learning curve, it is better to be challenged than not. Thanks for the great info!

    Regards, Ron

[Hey Ron, appreciate the comments. I see both sides of the issue. I'm just trying to figure out how to provide articles that are of max benefit to my readers. But I have advanced readers as well as beginners. I tried sending out an advanced ezine version but that didn't really catch on. So I'm trying to handle all-in-one.]

  • Tim Toy says:

    Hello Marlon,

I am a subscriber of many IM Marketers and do read all of them. But I rarely encountered such consistent quality advice in their e-zines. I think most IM gurus should be like you – who delivers quality evergreen content every time – instead of just recommending their readers to the next big launch with their bonus.

Now regarding your post I really like your comparison of Clickbank and CPA programs (College & Graduate Programs). I think I am still in College and need to learn many things before proceeding towards those Graduate programs 🙂

  • Carlos says:

    Hi Marlon,

I think you are an IM genius.

I have many of your products.

    This post was not useful.

Only those who are quite advanced will benefit.

Lack of focus was the problem. Lack of details.

Having said that, I usually try to read your posts 3 times because they are so rich in info.

    Not this post though.

    Respectfully,

    Carlos

[Hey Carlos, I appreciate your feedback. I hear what you're saying bro. Thanks for posting.]

  • Vance Sova says:

    Hi Marlon,

Good stuff but as many say this time it is more like a list of things to do in a sequence but the list is meaningful and understandable only for the advanced crowd.

It is OK though because it gives an overview of the long road ahead for those who are just at the beginning.

    Vance.

[Vance, yes, it was a bit advanced. You don't have to do all of those things. The cpa networks are optional but an alternative a lot of marketers are going to. You do need the squeeze pages, emails and traffic source. Most all of that is handled in only 1 product and in 6 weeks…promodashboard.com. So it's more like a 6 week road, not a long road!]

  • Donald says:

    Marlon,

This ezine to me is by far the most informative. It was a lot more meaty how to stuff. It really helps you get a good start on getting going.

You really kept it simple so an 6th grader could understand it.

    Thank you.

    Donald

[Donald, without writing a whole book, I tried to put some meaty stuff in it beyond the simple basics….not that those aren't great.]

  • Fran says:

This is all good but maybe a little advanced for me right now. I got your promo dashboard and have to say I absolutely LOVE it. First thing is to build a list, right? I am doing one step a day so I get things done, but don't get overwhelmed…so, I will be checking in but my first priority is the promo dashboard. After that I will need direction.

    Thanks, so much,

    Fran

[Fran, after Promo Dashboard, go to Product Dashboard and create a product.]

  • stevieod says:

    Hello Marlon,

I don't want to rain on your parade, and you do want the truth, right?

Marlon, vague generalities and broad basic statements are not detailed step by step instructions.

Real step by step instructions means just that. Type this URL in, click on this icon, type this exact information in, click on 'Save', etc.

So, just saying "a. Find one new source of traffic by someone who has created a system for it." just does not cut it.

Find who? What kind of system? As you can see, no details.

Or this one, "b. Get the basics in place.

If there’s software to buy or install, get that done by someone.

Get the basics up and running."

What basics? Done by who? With what software? So how do you get the basics up and running? Again, no details.

I know exactly what you are going to say, so I'll stop here.

    Best regards,

    steve

[Steve, fair enough AND in my paid products I break it down into extreme detail if you've ever seen my Dashboards. Who ELSE is giving you this quality of information every week for free?]

  • Hi Marlon

Yes, I think that '7 Ways' was a little advanced. I'd just like to have a squeeze page!

I have Dahboard Design . it was so good to find a Step by Step program, and I'm working through it. I've been 'investigating" income making opportunities on the net since I went to a World Summit Seminar in Sydney in Oct 2006. Spent money on programs that promise the world, but don't deliver the basic instructions. And then you find the instructions are all on videos and you spend hours transcribing videos to find the order to do things, but the curser moves so quickly you can't see where the instructor is clicking. The feeling is is absolute frustration. Now I know I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to computers, but I'm not stupid. I have Bachelor Degrees in Education and Science, and a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree.

I'm beginning to understand why many students fail at school.

So, as an educator, I give you full points for your step by step programs. I will get the Promo one when I can afford it. Why don't I have money with all those degrees? Simple. Had 3 strokes- cerebral bleeds- in 2005 and this destroyed my practice. But I never give in , give up, surrender, or accept defeat.I just have to find another way to make money. So what I would like you to do, with your amazing knowledge, is write the definitive text book for Making Money On The Internet. Step by Step of course. And without too many links to other programs. I get halfway to understanding/ learning something and get told to go to another program and poof! Where was I? Not that I'm saying you do this, but so many wanna be gurus do. I think you are the man with the goods so to speak, and you like to educate. So please consider it. You probably have written it already. It is just in separate folders! And one thing I find lacking in just about everything is: how to correct one's mistakes. For example: When trying to upload to one's website and it goes pear shaped, How does one fix it? Ok Enough. Thanks for listening. Joanne

[Joanne, what I would do on the mistakes is hire someone from elance.com, rentacoder.com, getafreelancer.com or odesk.com to fix it for me. You are lucky to be alive and typing so life is good. I think promo dashboard is the product you're looking for. Everything all in 1 product would be cashlikeclockwork.com but it's really too many things to do at once.]

  • Pete Egeler says:

Some good advice, Marlon, but I'll need to print it out so I can go over, and over, and over again. Want to make sure I soak it all up. 🙂

    Pete

[Hey Pete, that's cool. I threw out some more advanced things I could spent a lot of time teaching.]

  • Kathy says:

As usually your news letter is great.Lot's of info for anyone.I am using things I have learned to build blogs, promote blogs and sell blogs. My last one was sold for $550 on the site-point.I can drive over 400 visitors in 2 weeks and get sign ups and few sales which increase blog value when selling. This is my business model now and I am earning more and more with each blog I sell.Thank you for the dashboards, evergreen tactic and Ockham’s Razor ebook.Thank you Marlon for your support 🙂

  • yinoway says:

I liked your article very much. Can I translate this into Japanese and post to my site blog of above website?

    Sincerely

    yujine

[Hi Yujine, yes, you can translate my ezine articles and post as long as you leave

the links in them. That would be very cool.]

  • John Watson says:

I liked the wrestling analogy but found the article lacked your usual bite because it seemed overcomplicated and

    lacked focus.

[Hey John, thanks for your comments. I was trying to throw in a few advanced pieces for some of the folks on my list. And frankly, sometimes I like to cover a little more advanced concepts so I don't get bored writing.]

  • Ted Johnson says:

Great stuff as always Marlon !!!

Thanks for posting stuff we can use …

[Hey Ted, thanks. I hope it's useful to you.]

  • This is great stuff. A bit advanced for me but that is what I need right?

I don't trust most marketeers and most information is so stale or very tactical that it either does not work or works only for a short while.

    Naveen

[Naveen, it was a bit advanced. But I cover the basics almost every week. So I thought the ideas might prove useful to a few.]

  • Margaret Marshall says:

Sadly I do not understand most things you say – maybe because I speak English English not American English or maybe because you are too technical. I came to you site looking for help – I might get it if Iunderstood what you were saying.

[Margaret, I can't help on the English. Go to my other articles on the blog and see if they are easier to read. I use lingo so that could be an issue.]

  • Warren says:

    Great as always, thanks.
