Marlon here.

I’m at the Joel Comm event in Colorado.  It’s the filming of
“Who wants to be the next Internet millionaire.  It’s a reality
show that will be broadcast over the web.

The only thing I can say is:

WOW!

Actually, that is ALL I’m allowed to say.  But I can’t wait to
tell you more.  Without one iota of hype, I CAN tell you this
will make Internet history.  Nuff said.

I gave a presentation somewhat typical of my zany style.  But
amongst all the flash and dash was great information.  And I was
QUITE impressed with what the participants DID with my info.

Sheez.  I wish I could tell you more.

While here, I got to spend substantial time with Barry Goss
who is Heather Vale’s partner.  Heather does all the interviews
with “gurus.”  She comes from a TV and radio background.

Barry and Heather had their first 6 bagger — a classic Jeff
Walker style launch that made 6 figures in 1 day.

Barry uses a software program for his teleseminars I was totally
impressed with.  After I give it a trial with my Gold Milcers,
I’ll give you a report.

Barry can do the basics in Photoshop. He can do some html and
video editing.  He can do teleseminar stuff.  In short, he’s
acquired BASIC skills that are needed in this business.

Some people think I’m totally off base by trying to get people
to learn some Photoshop elements, basic graphic principles,
basics of html and so forth.

I beg to differ.  Not all but MOST of the people who are
extremely successful in this business can do the basics.  They
can do at least some graphics.  They can do html.  They can create
copy.

I spoke to one of Joel’s employees who does some of the copy for
Joel.  He writes a draft and then Joel critiques it.  I use that
process in my business also.

Notice that Joel is good enough at copy to critique and tweak it.

Now, Barry doesn’t write his own copy yet.  He outsources it. But
on one project, he paid $7,000 to the copywriter.  Most people
don’t have the $7,000.

I STILL think the Design Dashboard is a must buy for anyone.  I
heard one marketer basically say he didn’t think people needed it
because you can outsource graphics for $200.

Which IS true.  Yet, this person CAN and DOES do his own html and
graphics at times.  And did it all in the beginning.

That’s the pattern I see.  At first, you’re a jack of all trades.
And as you grow successful, you outsource more and more.

If you use the Design Dashboard and maybe a book or two on
Photoshop Elements, in 1-4 weeks, you’ll be shocked at what you
can do.  That is, if you really work at it.

I’m NOT saying there won’t be a learning curve.  Someone once
complained the videos were too fast.  OK.  So be it.  Not everyone
learns at the same rate.  But you CAN watch the videos more than
once.

The bottom line is some people aren’t willing to expend EFFORT.
That is GREAT news for you.  Lazy people are easy to compete
against.

My preference is to compete against lazy people who won’t spend
anything on learning or self education.

People say really, really stupid things like, “I can’t imagine
ever spending $XXX dollars just for information.”

THAT is the kind of person I want to compete against.  A little
know how, a little superior strategy and a little work and you
can blow them out of the water.

Anyway, I digress from the Design Dashboard.  It is more than
just graphic design.  It covers ftp, autoresponders and shopping
carts.

You don’t have to buy that to set up your affiliate program.  But
it will not only make it easier but also give you the same methods
I use.  And YES, we do talk about how to get new affiliates.

And there’s a lot more in it than just setting up the software.
It’s how I MARKET to my affiliates.  It isn’t a “secrets” type
product.  It’s an action product.

But it’s more than just basics.  It’s about CLONING or duplicating
the same successful actions I use in my own program.

I try to teach what I actually DO.

What I’m trying to say here is the people I meet who are really
doing well, they’ve taken the time to acquire basic skills:

1.  html
2.  Photoshop or Elements
3.  Audio or video skills

Then they learn the basics of:

1.  Copywriting
2.  Membership site software like Amember or the Butterfly script
3.  Hosting
4.  Affiliate software

You can have all the fancy techniques in the world.  But if you
don’t master the “tools of the trade” I really feel you are
seriously handicapped.

Of course, software programs, copywriting, graphics all have
learning curves.   And they aren’t all easy to learn.  That
KEEPS others from competing with you!  It’s a good thing.

It weeds out lazy people who don’t want to learn or do anything
remotely hard.  THOSE are the people who honestly should keep
their day jobs.

The flip side is that if you get the basic skills in place,
you are preparing yourself for success.

The most challenging of all the skills to learn is copywriting.
My new friend Barry is still hiring it out.  You can do that.  But
good copywriters aren’t cheap.

I realize all this is a lot more than just click a button and
money rolls in.  But it IS the truth.

I mentioned the Butterfly marketing script.  Barry set it up with
the same hosting Mike Filsaime uses.  I think it’s called Kiosk
or something like that.

And he hired these people to set it up who are experts in the
script and have a lot of tweaks for it.

If you use the script, I recommend it.  He also uses Amember as
I do for his membership sites.

you a quick report from the scene.

‘Bout two miles away from me is the new place in town.

You walk in the doors and there are plenty of nice, cushiony
chairs to sit down in as well as a table for larger groups.
The earth tones help you relax and settle down to enjoy your
coffee.

And then….then there is the “humming machine” over on the
left side.  It’s the largest coffee roasting machine I’ve ever
seen.  Not that I’ve seen many.

But it has this gigantic cylinder with big ol’ hoses runnin’
from it up through the ceiling.

And it has some knobs on the front and a crank you use to
make it hum.

A middle-aged man goes over to it and pours coffee in and
cranks it up.  As you sit drinking your cappuccino, there’s
a hum as the machine does its magic.

I don’t know what magic there is in the beans it spits out
after its done with ’em.  But they sure do brew up a tasty
cup o’ joe.

As I sit drinking my cappuccino and reading a book (marketing,
of course), I notice the dull hum in the background.  Yet,
reliably, predictably, the machine spits out perfectly roasted
coffee beans.

Such is your web site.

It is your money machine that spits out orders.  And done right,
it makes a beautiful hum as it works on your behalf.

For that machine to grind out roasted beans, you have to input
raw beans….the raw materials.  The same goes for your web
site.  You need traffic.  That is your raw material.

This summer, the number of new, highly touted Internet marketing
products is going to match last summer’s.  It’ll be somewhere
between a fireworks show and a freak show.  He who has the most
dazzling fireworks show and best illustrated affiliate action
with the largest prizes wins.

Last summer it was the BMW car for the first place winner.  This
year, maybe it’ll be the Lambo.

So if you want to crank up your affiliate program, there’s no doubt
that a good offer and sizzling prizes works.

But how much do these offers have to do with you?  So you buy the
program.  You learn the deep, dark secrets.  Then what?

Where does that leave YOU?  You’ve got $1,000 to $5,000 less in
your bank. That’s for certain.  But are you any better off?

I’m an advocate of education. I DO believe buying programs that FIT
your model.  I do NOT believe in buying things just because a lot
of people sell them “so they must be good.”

If you don’t know this, the BIG SECRET behind massive launches with
many affiliates simultaneously promoting is NOT the quality or
usefulness of the product to ANYONE.

It boils down to how much preparation went into it (sometimes months
of work). And how big the affiliate prizes are.  Last year, the big
prize was a BMW car.

So far this year, it’s a Rolex.  But I think a Lambo car may be in
the mix.  You know, the next gigantic launch has to have
affiliate prizes that trump the prior one.

None of this is BAD or wrong.  I happen to like the people involved
in these launches.  The problem comes when people buy something
based on the social proof of everyone and their dog promoting it
EVEN IF it has nothing to do with your “model” for making money.

I don’t care if a chorus of 100,000 angels sing in unison
(motivated by the desire to win crazy prizes) that you should buy
an info product.

That does NOT in one iota make it more VALID or useful to you.

It’s all about the model. What’ the model. Is it relevant to you.
The prizes are good.  I have no problem with them.  It’s a great
deal for affiliates.  But YOU need to be an educated consumer.

Because I’m telling you right now. Between now and the end of
September, it’s going to get crazy with launches.

OK.  So I’m assuming you’ve bought some “secrets.”  Maybe a lot of
“secrets.”  Where do you go NEXT?

If you take away all the smoke and mirrors (which is what I help
people do), in spite of all the hype, there are only a FEW ways
you make money in this market:

1.  Products — Most people sell info products.  You have ebooks,
CD’s and courses, coaching, teleseminars, membership sites and
so forth.

2.  Traffic —  You get that from organic seo, pay per click,
and associate programs.  You can also buy banners.  Most viral
marketing that works is a derivation of an affiliate or associate
program.

3.  Sales conversion — You have webinars, teleseminars and sales
letters.  A lot of people have gone to verbal selling because they
suck at writing sales letters.

Products + Traffic + Sales Conversion = Cash

Here are my NINE LAWS of Internet marketing:

Law one:  At the end of the day, you still have to IMPLEMENT.
You have to do.

Law two:  Learning secrets is more fun and sexy than doing.

Law three:  The money is in the doing

Law four:  Doing is frustrating because you will always run into
snags and things that don’t work as simple or easy as you wish they
would.

Law five:  The people who win DO. They implement. The people who
don’t DO, don’t make money.

Law six:  You can get so stuck in “learning secrets” that you never
do.

Law seven:  If it’s dirt simple with no brain required, if all you
do is push a button and money comes in — then all the opportunity
has already been sucked out.  You will NOT make money long term
because there IS no barrier to entry and everyone will jump on
board.

Law eight:  When everyone jumps on board, the opportunity is often
gone.  Blue Ocean book was right.

Law nine:  Problems are good. They provide barriers to entry for
competitors. It’s the most basic law of supply and demand.

I believe in buying secrets.  I believe in specialized knowledge
and know how. I also believe the most important part of the whole
equation is what you DO.

What you DO is as important as what you KNOW.

Doing requires confronting what is NOT comfortable to you.  Watching
DVD’s and going to seminars is comfortable.  DOING is not. Why?
It’s a learning curve.  Things don’t work.  Things aren’t as simple
as you wish.

That’s part of life.

But if you really wanna make it happen, you gotta focus on DOING.

And the main reason I bring up this uncomfortable and unpopular
truth is because I want YOU to succeed.

My products for the most part are NOT about secrets. They’re about
DOING.  Yeah, that isn’t as sexy and interesting and fun.

But do you wanna be entertained?  Or do you wanna make money?

Honestly.

If you wanna be entertained by the biggest fireworks show and
dazzling simultaneous blitzkriegs of promotions by affiliates,
then have a good time.

Enjoy the show.

Personally, for entertainment I recommend movies, comedy shows and
magic shows.  But it’s whatever floats your boat.

If you wanna make money, then buy your know how carefully and focus
on DOING.  You don’t HAVE unless you DO.

If you’re STUCK and just can’t get it going, I recommend:

Anthony Robbins 30-day personal power program.

You gotta confront ACTION.  You gotta do things you are NOT
comfortable with.  You gotta pick up the phone and call people or
do interviews.  You gotta write things like sales letters than are
new learning curves.

And yes, you can outsource some or all of the above — IF you have
the money to do it.  And can confront SPENDING the money to hire
people to do things. And confront the idea you probably will end
up spending money on some things that are junk or done wrong.

QUESTIONS:

The basic questions are:  Who are you selling to?  What you selling
them?  And how are you finding them?

But I’ll spell them out:

Do you have your target market or target audience yet?

That for a lot of people is the point at which they stop or get
stuck.

All things being equal, you’re best off selling something you can at
least get passionate about.  If I wasn’t doing the Internet
marketing thing, I’d be doing info products on magic or chess or
public speaking. Or perhaps something about coffee.

2.  Have you done your 12 product survey?

3.  Do you have your sales letter written.

sense to drop your customers into an affiliate program and get them

It’s another DOING product.  And yeah, it isn’t perfect or flawless

that have to be solved. Confront things that aren’t perfect.

If it was all a piece of cake, we would all be rich now. Wouldn’t
we?

In the past, I talked about the seduction of “easy” methods.  If
you look back at the things I talked about, you’ll see most of the
money you spent buying them was totally wasted.

Yet, it was an unpopular truth when I told you the truth.  I
actually got some of the most vicious emails when I wrote those
things.  Because a LOT of players had vested interest in teaching
those methods we ALL new wouldn’t work a year or two down the road.

But darnit, they sure were SEXY and easy to sell.

The people who sold those programs made millions in some cases.  So
how did those methods work out for you?

They didn’t, did they?

I’ve been preaching and teaching about the songs of the sirens for
HOW long now?

OK. So a nice gentleman writes me that he avoided the songs of the
sirens, created a product and it didn’t make money.

And he blamed me more or less.

That’s part of marketing. NOT all products work.  I don’t care WHO
you are.

You pick yourself up. Do a new survey. And move on. You look at what
the market IS buying.

Are you gonna DO?

Are you gonna CONFRONT?

Are you gonna have a clear model and stick to it? Or get sidetracked
every week but a blitzkrieg of fireworks, flash and dash?

Do a million angels on a pinhead singing praises for a model that
doesn’t fit what your doing or won’t work a year from now make it
any more valid for YOU?

Engage your brain.

Well, we had a party for Matt’s going away. I bought
crazy sponge Bob napkins and plates and we had a
cake with “happy trails” written on it.

Then we sat down and watched an old Walter Hailey
video I had where he talked about how “Think and Grow
Rich” changed his life.

The next day, Tim got his baptism by fire because
we had several non-standard problems. But his eagle
eye spotted the issues and kept us on track.

To help Tim out, I brought in additional manpower
from a temp agency to help out.

Last night I was reading some information from Greg
Whitehall, a consultant to the dental industry (I tend
to read marketers and business ideas from all sorts of
industries).

He talked about a syndrome I think a lot of people have:
It’s where you enter a field like Internet marketing
bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Then one of several things happens:

1.  You have a big trauma, problem, crisis or setback.

2.  You try some things that don’t work out.

3.  Everything you try flops

As a result, what was once a prosperity goal to make a
mint, becomes a survival goal of “let’s just get by.”

And, if that’s a conscious decision on your part, there’s
no particular problem with it.  Life is what you decide to
make of it.

But I think in many cases, the downgraded goals is a subtle
one that you don’t realize has happened.

So I’ll tell you a funny story.  As you know, I’m rehabbing
my knee from a little knee scope.  I’m a bit of a slow healer.
So about 3 or 4 weeks ago I was trying to rush to the bathroom
during a movie, so I didn’t miss the good scenes.  I was
scooting along with a limp when this guy in the hallway saw me.

“He said, “I see you have a limp.  Don’t feel bad.  Where I
come from, we don’t call it a gimp.  We call it PIMP!”

I cracked up.

I guess the difference between gimp, pimp and walking normal is
how hard you rehab.  Or, I could settle for a bit of a hitch
in my gettyup and not do rehab.  I could settle for survival.

But I haven’t.  I’m walking a lot better now.  Almost normal.

About a year ago, a martial artist (in mixed martial arts)
fought another guy (Matt Hughes for you UFC fans) and got
whipped.  He worked on his arsenal and added additional
kicks, moves and so forth.

And in the next fight, he won handily.

He could have just been in survival mode and limped along without
improving.  But he chose to work and add new moves.  And improve

Some of you are right there at the edge of success.  Yet, you’ve
let yourself downgrade from prosperity goals to survival goals.
You’ll NEVER get where you wanna go with survival goals.

Maybe you’re tired and need to recuperate some.  Take a rest.
Build up your mental and emotional reserves.  Then get back
to work.

Most people in this business are scared to talk about work.
It’s a dirty word.  People hear it at seminars and walk out
of the room during that speech.

I don’t work a lot.  If you define work as doing things you
don’t wanna do. I DO spend an unusual amount of time learning
and sorting through complexity, so I can deliver simplicity
to you.

In a way, that’s my work.  It’s second nature to me and what
I enjoy, so I don’t consider it work.

Where are you at?  Where’s your heart at?  Do you need a
rest?  Do you need to add more skills to your arsenal?
Do you need to set a new prosperity goal?

You can’t survive your way into prosperity.

ANSWER:

Here’s the thing:  I don’t know of a cheaper source of big
traffic.

Writing and submitting articles is a great way to get traffic.
And can supplement your affiliate program. But it’s not
replacement for it.

Some people say, “I don’t want to spend money for the software
to run an affiliate program.”

I say:  You’ve gotta have the tools of the trade.

You can’t run a business on dreams or build great traffic on
cotton candy.

You don’t need a LOT of software. But you do need more than
Clickban in my estimation.  Most people wanna take the shortcut
and ONLY use Clickbank.

I beg to differ. And I’ll put up my traffic numbers over the past
7 years or longer as evidence to support my assertion.

There ARE things to save money on.  But you can’t “cheap” your
way into success.  There are some price tags you gotta pay.
The price of learning. The price of good tools.  The price of effort.
